The Victoria Selective Entry Test is a measure for students academic merit and critical thinking abilities. Selective High Schools offer an extra challenge for academically gifted children and provide an environment with similarly talented students. There are approximately 1000 places for Selective Entry and roughly 5000 students compete for it.

There are four Selective Entry HighSchools (SEHS) in Victoria for high-achieving students:
- Melbourne High School(boys only),
- The Mac Robertson Girls’ High School (girls only),
- Nossal High School (all genders) and
- Suzanne Cory High School (all genders).

What is the Victoria Selective Entry High School’s selection process for Year 9?

Students currently in Year 8 are selected for entry into the Selective Schools through the Selective-entry test conducted by ACER in July. There is an application fee for sitting the test. The placement is based on the test score. 

Note: Your child can sit for the Victoria Selective Entry High School’s test for Year 9 when they are in Year 8. Also, the applicant has not sat the examination earlier.  

What is the Victoria Selective Entry High School’s selection process for Year 10 and Year 11?

The four selective schools offer limited entry through vacant placement in Year 10 and Year 11. All candidates wishing to apply for enrolment into Year 10 are required to sit the Year 10 Academic Ability Assessment Test. Please check the individual schools for further details.

What is the minimum entry score for placement in the Victoria selective entry high schools?

A successful candidate will have demonstrated strong performance in each of the components of the applications process  
- Entrance test: Your child's raw marks in reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, mathematics, and writing
- Moderation and scaling of marks to calculate the total standard score

Selective schools often have a higher percentage of Band 6 (top band) marks in the Higher School Certificate and higher ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) to determine university entry.

What is the Victoria Selective Entry High Schools test structure?

The Victoria SelectiveEntry High Schools test consists of 5 tests. The total duration of the exam is approximately 2hours plus a break. 

The ability test consists of verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning.

- The Verbal Reasoning Test is for 30 minutes, and students need to answer 60 multiple-choice questions. This test aims to measure the student's ability to think and reason using words and language. This includes vocabulary, word relationships, classification and deduction. - The Numerical Reasoning Test is for 30 minutes, and students need to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. This test aims to measure the student's ability to think and reason using numbers. This includes series, matrices, arithmetical reasoning and deduction. 

The achievement test consists of reading comprehension and mathematics.

- The Reading Comprehension Test is for 30minutes, and students need to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. This test measures the student's capacity to read and interpret meaning from written passages and correct, complete, and punctuate sentences.
- The Mathematics Test is for 30 minutes, and students need to answer 60multiple-choice questions. This test aims to measure the student's ability to measure Year-level appropriate mathematical knowledge, including items tapping numbers, measurement, algebra, space and data 
- The Writing Test (Persuasive or Creative) is for 15minutes, and students need to write an open response based on the given stimulus. This test aims to measure the student's ability to convey ideas clearly in written form. In addition, punctuation, creativity, construction, grammar, spelling and relevance to the task are assessed.

How difficult is the Victoria Selective Entry High Schools test?

The Victoria Selective Entry High Schools test measures students' ability and achievement through a series of five individual tests. 

Achievement tests (reading comprehension, mathematics and writing) measure actual achievement or performance in some key academic areas. Achievement scores are influenced by a child's ability and the application and practise of knowledge that has been learned.  

Ability tests (verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning) are designed to measure a child's ability to think, reason and solve problems without necessarily relying on prior knowledge. Ability generally predicts how quickly a child will be able to learn and the level of complexity they can comfortably deal with.
