Continue to read to learn more about how you can assist your child in his/her studying.

What Are NAPLAN Exams?

The NAPLAN is a standardised test given toAustralian students in year three, year five, year seven, and year nine. It is conducted to test reading, spelling, grammar, numeracy, and writing.

NAPLAN exams are created and distributed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment andReporting Authority (ACARA). NAPLAN was first given to students in 2008.

Why Is NAPLAN Important?

NAPLAN exams are important for multiple reasons. Firstly, NAPLAN results affect school funding. Additionally, results help guide educators on what curriculum to focus on.

Parents can view NAPLAN exam scores as a tool as well. They can see where their child's strengths and weaknesses are and in turn, help their child grow academically.

Inmost cases, NAPLAN scores will not influence your child's ability to get admitted into a college or university. There are other requirements and measures that will dictate where your son or daughter attends.

The key benefit to taking NAPLAN tests, as highlighted earlier, is that they will demonstrate what areas your child needs improvement on. As your child improves on topics he/she struggles with, this will ultimately make him/her a more versatile and attractive college candidate.

How to Help Your Child Prepare for the NAPLAN Test

Fortunately, there are many resources and tips to help your son or daughter prepare for theNAPLAN test. Below are some foundational tips to get you started.

Tip 1: Let Your Child Be the Guide

Your child should know what areas he or she struggles in. Ask your child to be completely transparent about his or her concerns and make it clear from the start that you want to be a supporter and collaborator in the preparation process.

With your child having the ability to lead conversations, he or she can be the guide for NAPLAN studying. This is an excellent thing. Ultimately, good study habit scan be formed for success on the exam and in future endeavours.

Take, for instance, your son or daughter expressing that he/she is having trouble with writing. You ask to see some of their work and you determine what may be lacking. Now knowing that writing is a weakness, you can find or create activities to help make your son or daughter more comfortable.

Tip 2: Incentivise Preparation

To succeed in mastering a skill, practice is imperative. Preparing for a standardised test is no different. To support your child for the NAPLAN exam, you will have to encourage them to practice and practice some more.

Studying is far from the top of the list of things children and teenagers enjoy doing. This is why some form of incentive may be helpful. It could be an allowance bonus, more computer/console playtime, or taking your son or daughter out to a nice dinner.

The type of incentive is completely up to you, but your child may be more willing to cooperate with preparation if there is an incentive besides a good test score.

Tip 3: Use Practice Resources

The ACARA and third-party providers have developed preparation resources for a reason.Understandably, preparing for the NAPLAN can be challenging and stressful.

Per the requirement of the ACARA, past NAPLAN exams are available to view online. To get practice tests, a third-party test preparation company can be especially beneficial to research.

With the use of resources such as practice exams and workbooks, your child can learn the feel of the test. He/she will see what it will be like and what typeof questions to expect.

Once your child gets accustomed to the layout and format of the NAPLAN test, exam day will be less daunting. He or she will have familiarity and this should bring a sense of comfort.

Acquiring practice resources is an investment in your child. These practice documents will help your child immensely and give them a step ahead.

Tip 4: Make Sure Your Child Eats and Sleeps Well Before The Test

Exam day can be stressful enough. For your child to be mentally ready, physical preparation is just as crucial.

The night before exam day, encourage your son or daughter to rest and go to sleep early. Do not request that they study the evening before the test. It is also recommended that your son or daughter gets a nutritious meal for dinner.

Break fast is often considered the most important meal of the day. Before your child leaves the morning of his or her NAPLAN test, be sure to make a tasty and nutritious breakfast for him/her.

With plenty of rest and good nutrition intake, your son or daughter can feel physically prepared to succeed in the exam room.

Tip 5: Relax, Do Not Over Stress

Of course, you want your son or daughter to do well and you have expressed this to them. Of equal essence, explain to them that all you desire is that they do their best. Let them know it is just a test and that they should go into the exam relaxed.

Articulate to your child that they are well prepared and should feel confident. If there are questions they are unsure of, that is completely ok.

One particular test-taking strategy that is helpful is to return to challenging questions at the end. Doing this will allow your child to focus on and complete as many questions as possible.

Entering an exam room relaxed, prepared, and not stressed can not only help your child both mentally and physically but can create confidence that leads to better results.
